According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates released August 27, 2008, New Hampshire has the lowest percentage of people living in poverty in the nation.

More than 90,200 New Hampshire residents lived below the poverty line in 2007, representing about 7.1 percent of the state population.

New Hampshire also has the lowest number of children living below the poverty line.

New Hampshire also has the sixth highest median household income in the country with residents earning a median salary of more than $62,000.

But Strafford County's poverty population exceeds that of the statewide average.

Regional Master Plan: Toward the Year 2020 - Planning Background Report
Regional Housing Needs Assessment: Toward Housing Policies and Implementation Strategies

For the period between 2001-2020 the SRPC region is projected to be growing at a rate of 22.9% or 30,343 over the twenty-year period. Middleton has the smallest growth rates in terms of absolute nurnbers, along with Madbury and New Durham. Communities with the largest increases in population are projected to be Rochester, Dover, and Somersworth. Towns with smallest growth rates in terms of percentages are Durham 9.7%, Middleton 10.9%, Barrington 13.8%, and Strafford 17.0%. If these projections hold true, the smaller communities already experiencing an affordable housing crisis will encounter a larger population already burdened by not being able to find affordable housing.
