Start, Baby's Best Beginnings provides home visiting services to
at-risk pregnant women through the first year of the child's
life. The program serves participants living in the northern tier
of Strafford County by providing comprehensive services
responding to the individual needs of families. Our intent is to
promote healthy pregnancies, birth outcomes, and child
development by educating parents in the areas of health, safety,
parenting, child development, and family planning. In addition,
we hope to ensure that al1 necessary supports are in place so
that families can provide a safe and nurturing environment.

and provides the following: free referrals and information for
families seeking quality child care and preschools; start-up
information for family child care; technical assistance to child

The Children's Museum of Portsmouth is a non-profit museum
featuring 19 hands-on exhibits related to the arts, science, and
world culture, with something to see and do for all ages. Through
Experience Counts, we hope the museum can serve as a new
gathering place for seniors to meet and interact with children
and the greater seacoast community. Experience Counts at the
Children's Museum of Portsmouth:
This new initiative is sponsored by the Members Care Fund through
the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. Beginning in March 04,
the first Friday of each month is designated as Experience Counts
day at the Museum, providing many benefits to seniors of all
ages, abilities, and interests, such as:
Free admission for all seniors ages 55+ and elder caregivers from
9:30 am to 5:00 pm. Free admission for all accompanying
grandchildren and child friends of seniors. Staff-led tours of
the museum and the opportunity to explore exhibits all day.
Special themed activities designed to engage both seniors and
children. Light refreshments (served at 9:30 am and 1:30 pm) and
spaces for seniors to socialize. The chance to learn about
volunteer opportunities at the museum.

Offering Education Programming: Pre-vocational, academic, and
vocational educational programs for special needs children ages 3
through 21 who have been determined to be developmentally and/or
physically disabled, have autism, or behavior disorders.
Occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, and
behavioral consulting are provided as part of the educational
plan. Hippotherapy (horse back riding therapy), horticultural
program, aquatics, job coaching, and community recreational
activities are also offered. We also provide an after school
program, consulting and individual services on a sliding fee
scale to students enrolled elsewhere.
Program Length: School calendar year with extended school year
possible. As a cost effective, community based, client centered
service, the center believes in developing the full potential of
every child within the child's community.

Head Start: A program of Strafford County
Community Action that provides pre-school children in low income
households with enrichment in the areas of education, health,
nutrition, social services and parent involvement. Children with
special needs are welcome and fully included.
Early Head Start: Provides comprehensive services to expectant parents and income eligible families with children ages 0-3 in Farmington, Milton, and Rochester areas. Parent education in the areas of nutrition, health, infant and toddler development, literacy, community resources, job skills, and more. Traveling Tales: A colorful van brings books for children of all ages into neighborhoods in Dover, Somersworth, Rochester, and Farmington. Families may keep books for a week, then exchange them for new titles. Trained staff offer story time, puzzles, games, arts activities, and a snack. Available to parents and children.
